SUMMARY CARE RECORDS
Since we published the details below, the situation with regards to Summary Care Records has changed:
- The government has been asked to review the scheme by the BMA, as they are unhappy with the implied consent aspect and the lack of public consultation;
- The government has put the “roll-out” on hold, although preparatory steps are still being taken so that, if we do go ahead with the scheme, the infrastructure is in place to do so quickly, safely and efficiently.
Oakengates Medical Practice has “Opted Out” on behalf of all patients, until we are satisfied that the following criteria have been met:
a) There has been a suitable and comprehensive public consultation;
b) Our patients have been given sufficient information to make an informed decision whether they want to participate or not;
c) We are satisfied that the system’s security is robust and inaccessible to unauthorised users.
In due course, should you wish for your records to be uploaded and we, as a Practice, still hold firm our decision not to do this on your behalf, Telford & Wrekin Primary Care Trust will be able to provide you the contact details of local surgeries who are participating in the scheme.
We will also continue to accept “Opt Out” forms from our patients who do not wish to participate. You may change your mind at any time by letting us know in writing.

The Government is implimenting a scheme that will give health professionals access to part of your medical records, should they need them in an emergency. They will need to ask your consent to do this, and if anyone looks at them and should not have done so, it will be possible to see who has done this, although it does not automatically get spotted.
In Telford and Shropshire the Primary Care Trust (local health authority), has decided to restrict this information to your drugs and allergies. The information gets pulled off your GP records and uploaded to the National Spine computers.
If you don’t want this to happen, you need to send the practice a signed opt out form which you can download below.
Please understand that it is your choice, and you may decide that you want to decline.
